DDFI to Carburetor conversion
I bought a 2001 Buell X-1 Lightning motor which came with all the electronic components to include the wiring harness, ecm, fuel pump, switches, breakers etc. I'm putting it in a custom bobber project but I want to convert it back to carburation. There are just the many components in the electrical system to run it stock with DDFI and have a clean little bobber.
Here's my questions. Do I need to get a different ignition if I am going back to carb. If so, what kind? I know I need an intake manifold because the stock DDFI ones have the throttle bodies going into them which I intend to sell. What kind of carburetor do you recommend for best performance? Is there anything else that I need to change this Fuel Injected Buell X-1 into a carburated sportster with buell tags? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

If you want to convert back to Carb, you will need a new ingnition, either a pignose unit, or a standard ignition with the pickup that goes in the pignose. You will need to get a XL intake, they are cheap and easy to install. You will also need the VOES switch to advance the timing. As for a carb, i would recommended the Mikuni HSR 42, or a modified CV with accel pump.

I have a converted 99 S3, I was fortunate to locate a 98 Petcock gas tank but the have tank conversion kits for your FI tank, We used an ULTIMA ignition kit, with a Voes Switch ( ultima instructions are excellent), removed all FI components, used a late Sportster manifold, aftermarket Thick Mani rubber seals, first tried the CV carb but switched to a Mikuni HSR42, rerouted the head breathers ( piped two lines into a Tee fitting then route hose to a catch can or to the back of the bike past the tire!) .. It sounds and is a bit involved but I now have a bike that does not studder, midrange like a beast up to the rev limiter and it wants to go more! .. If you are a fair mech you can do it or partner up with someone that knows.. Plan on a long day.. Note: if you go mikuni the throttle cable may need to be changed to a late 80s Sportster, the Mik has such a strong return spring that I only have one cable)
