Default 1968 Vin number help

I have a 68 XLCH that is titled as a 68 assembled, with a vin # F10AB230 on the title. This number is stamped on the frame downtube near the casting number. it does look added. The same number is on the left engine pad in the V and on the bottom of the right case near the oil pump. I'm wondering if maybe this is a replacement motor in the orig frame and the number was added to the frame to satisfy the authorities. I know that prior to 69 Harley did not have a frame vin #. Can anyone help? Rich.

Engine should not have an F on it.
Who knows what someone has put on there.
If you got a legal title, it may only be legal in that state.... if at all.
Engine and frame numbers don't match until 1970
Here are the VIN changes in the Sportsterpedia.
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/s...story:99xx-01a

These are also replacement numbers. No numbers I've ever seen matching what you posted.
Replacement cases were stamped with the original number and the old one was 'supposed' to be destroyed per Harley Davidson.

those aren't H-D numbers.sounds like a reconstructed title with a state issued vin.

But destroying the old VIN pad is not something the State does.

True. That is what the dealer was suppose to do before the state ever got to see it.

The bike is from Michigan which titles by the frame. I was thinking the cases were replaced with no vin# case's (which I've heard were supplied by HD) by a non Harley dealer repair shop and they added there own vin. Who knows they might not have had the orig cases or were afraid to re- stamp the orig vin. My main Question is if anyone has ever seen these letters and numbers on another engine? Can't be the only one!

Maybe even a Harley shop did it but they did not have the orig cases to transfer the # from. Who knows.

Sorry but you ARE the only one.
And NO Harley Davidson Dealer stamped those numbers.
They would lose their license for doing so.

Bad news is sometimes hard to take.

Well no bad news really I've had the bike on the road for at least 6yrs. Not selling anyway. Have a clean title in my name (assembled). I checked the state sos and they must have issued the number (maybe). I know it's not a Harley number I just was wondering if anyone out there had a similar number from the state or where ever.

What are the belly numbers?
Go here to 'Engine Case' and click on 1929-1990 Belly Numbers PDF.
http://www.sportsterpedia.com/doku.p...01#engine_case
That may help to determine the exact year of the case.
