much better with the mik for me. getting around 46-47 mpg, where i was getting around 38-40 with the super e. i attribute the fuel economy to the lack of a fuel pump on the vm. i could probably squeeze a bit more out of it if i were to baby it, but who wants to do that!?

I have been running Bendix for years. Adjust the float to stop leaking. The accelerator
pump works great for starting. I wire up the choke, so it is out of use.

Loved the SU on my Shovel--- open primary left side, SU right side with that piston going up & down, straight pipes--- set off every car alarm in Brooklyn & Manhattan...

I think the OP should take the time to fix the Bendix and then decide. Whatever carb is run will need maintenance eventualy anyway.

You know, I've never heard an su piston bounce on a car engine, and I can't hear mine, except at start up.

I did an 80 mile ride on my XLCH last Saturday. It has a super e. It started on the first kick and it didn't miss a beat. With short straight pipes and 5 dollar baffles I have 28 intermediate jet and a 66 primary jet. I get about 38 mpg with this setup. It was hard to get to this final happy medium, a lot of jet changes.

I had a few different Bendix carbs to play with 20 years ago.Different issues with all of them but I did finally get one to behave for the most part. For me, only two drawbacks: fixed main jet would lose power at high rpm/wot, and the choke would shut itself on the highway when hauling ass for some reason.
It was great on low/midrange power though!
I installed my Super E in 1995 and have rebuilt it once since then. very reliable but a big carb for a1000cc. wot is fun though with this carb.
I like the Super E, not the most efficient carb for this engine but I do run drags so if you whack the throttle, you will gulp air and then blast off.
The Mikuni sounds interesting but my SS is not worn out yet, so if it breaks one day I might just try it

Don't have much to add to the endless carb debate except to add the Super E gets the worst mileage of all the popular carbs by a good bit. They start and run well, though. If mileage is a factor, if for instance you are running the little tank, the CV gets as much as ten miles a gallon more than the others and works well but it is ugly (but then so is the Mikuni in my opinion).

I've never had a Bendix leak. If yours leaks, there is something wrong.
