Generally speaking, on most carbs, if the mixture screw is on the eng side of throttle plate/slide, it controls the idle fuel supply. IN is leaner. If it is on the airbox side of he throttle plate/slide, it is an air screw. IN is richer.

the way 72s instructions he posted are where I started, 4 turns out the bike broke up and fell on it's face under acceleration, in 1/2 turn in it got better, but got horrible fuel mileage, then I started doing throttle chops with a pocket full of new plugs, when I got to 2 1/2 turns out the plugs looked a nice tan color, bike gets around 45 mpg. at 3 1/2 turns out it was about 25 mpg and plugs came out black and sooty.

That's odd, the adjustment for the idle jet in these instructions is the exact opposite of the instructions in the factory manual for a Bendix carb.

Stock Bendix Zenith;

In (clockwise) = lean

Out (counterclockwise) = rich

This is why I started this thread— 2 completely opposite sets on instructions— confusing!

That’s a nice read, 72. Yeah, I’m aware that they didn’t come on ‘69’s but mine is equipped with one.
