But, a piece of actual troubleshooting protocol that can be helpful, even though the OP has elected to send the unit back for warranty: temperature related failures can often be drug out into the light by getting one of those little cans of compressed air like you use for a keyboard and shooting the component when it fails, and seeing if it starts working again. I will definitely try this if the problem persist, the new unit is expected to be in today or tomorrow. I did use two different coils with the module that had identical end results. One with single fire and one with dual fire.

why do it this way instead of a 3 way switch?

The replacement ignition module came in yesterday and I've ridden about 60 miles with no issues. Yea mf'n haw!
