I fitted a tach to mine. There was a kit you could get; there were a few different ones with black faced tach, silver faced, etc. I got the # 69445-04 one, which was the silver faced tach, to match the replacement silver faced speedo I'd fitted.

It came with a digital to analogue converter and a wiring harness. Needed several wires splicing in. You needed to get the housing and bracket separately. I got an aftermarket bracket.

I'm not sure if you can still get those kits. I suspect not.

Harley sell a speedo/tacho combi unit, just plug and play sort of thing. A bit pricey though, but it's on my wish list. Although i do like Folkies set up.

You had to wire the wiring harness into: the B+ connector (power from battery), a ground, the signal lead into the data link connector, and ignition switched power.

I'd forgotten that the combined speedo/tach fits the '04 - '06 bikes. Several of the functions won't work on an '05 (gear position, range, fuel level). Nevertheless, it's an easy and neat (although pricy) solution. I've had those speedo/tachs on several bikes and really like them.

The 1200CX came with speedo/tach that is similar to the one folkie posted and it $100 cheaper. Bit the face is a different color and you can not change the colors of the LEDs

I've got the 4" HD combo that fits into a regular sportster housing. I would like the 5" HD combo that has an analog tach and analog speedo nut nobody has been able to tell me if it would plug right in and work. I would think it would since the plug interface is the same and the 4" works on the big twins and sportsters so they both must have the same data stream (I assume) but $315 bucks plus fabing or modding my own mount is a big gamble on something that I haven't found anyone that has tried it.

If you want a simple tachometer, you can use any aftermarket unit that uses a coil-triggered input...

If you are using a dual-fire HD tachometer on the single-fire models (2004-later non-Sport), you need a simple adapter to feed the tach a signal from your dual coil triggers (From the Sportsterpedia):
