Default Should I buy a 2010 BMW x5?

...at an auction of all things?

My brother has gotten good deals in the past -- it is a public auctiona nd not a dealers auction. Maybe just got lucky?

Might be the ultimate rub move tho.

I'd run far away from any newer BMW.. they leak oil and it's very expensive to fix.. of the ones we take in on trade we wholesale about 60-75% of them.. GREAT STATUS symbol.. little else

It will cost you in the long run, pretty sure if the car was left to auction it did not have good care in it's life. Buying used your better off with a domestic vehicle. Jeep or Chevy.

Plenty of dealers send most of their trades to auction regardless of condition. Most dealers do not really assess a car's prior care to determine if they keep it on the used lot. So no, auction doesn't automatically equal poor care.

As for long term costs you also can't predict that a BMW will automatically be higher (though there are certainly some possibilities).

That said it's not like Chevy or Jeep are leading any reliability surveys either.

Personally I like to buy new and hold onto it, but my bud's Dad runs a very enjoyable retirement business flipping high end auction cars. Something like an X5 would just barely blip his radar unless one of his kids wanted one then he'd pick it up for em in a heartbeat.

I think my bud is in the process of ditching his MDX for a Land Rover Sport Autobiography edition, as soon as the right one shows up at auction.

Could something break? Sure, but the money saved on the initial purchase should more than cover it.

Bone, reading the reviews on edmunds it seems that car--and maybe BMW in general now--are prone to needing very expensive repair work/not reliable

I could maybe save some money initially at an auction... but be looking at thousands in repairs to get that thing Road worthy.
