^This! This!^ 89 octane is just not going to be enough. Why would you even want to use anything but premium in a hot rod?

Timing hole is roughly 8° wide, so edges of hole are plus and minus about 4°.

So I will try some premium 92 octane and see if that helps if not I will pick up a bottle of octane booster.

What octane booster would you recommend?

And thanks to all who are trying to help me!

Premium made no difference, ran across a couple sportster and they sound the same just a little quieter or more subdued but the sound is still there. So I am just going to stop worrying about it and ride!

Finding this out is not uncommon. Sportsters make noise.

Just keep an eye on the spark plug burn color to be sure you're not running lean. You want a light tan burn, not a pure white.

Did you use the straw procedure to find out what cylinder bore size you have?

^^^ hot rod motors generally have a looser fit with clearances than a stock motor.mostly in the piston/bore fit.
