Default 2006 shifter shaft assembly on a 2004

I have a 2004 xl1200r that I need to replace the shifter shaft assembly on. The assembly has been discontinued, and I don't want to use a used part. Can anyone tell me if I can use the assembly from a 2006? I know the shaft is thicker at the primary cover end, but from my research I can change out the bushing and seal in my 2004 primary case with 2006 parts, but what I don't know is if the end of the 2006 shift shaft is thicker where it goes into the engine case. I'm hoping not.
Thanks for any help with this.

Thanks for that link, that's how I knew I could replace my 2004 primary cover bushing and seal to use a 2006 shifter shaft. I was hoping for confirmation that the 2006 shaft will fit into 2004 engine case as well as the cover.

This thread describes the problem - the '06-later version has a larger diameter shifter shaft.

You must have a shifter shaft, primary cover & shaft seal that all match.

04-05 are different than 06-later. Not interchangeable.

So, I can tell you that the 2006 and up shaft will fit a 2004-2005. You just need to change out the bushing and seal in your 04-05 primary cover to 06 and up parts. I can also tell you that unfortunately that wasn't my problem. I'm afraid I'll have to remove the engine and dig deeper into the transmission. Bummer.
