Default Turn signals won't work when cold

So a little interesting thing has been happening.

When it's cold out, my turn signals simply will not work.

My running nights stay on, my headlight hi/low work, and my horn. But not my turn signals.

What is the deal with this?

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on Turn Signals & TS Modules:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...3#turn_signals

I would start with a multimeter to be sure the TS Module (TSM) is getting power when the bike is cold.

Likely a poor connection somewhere. Clean the TSM connection.

Does either side flash? Do the 4-way flashers work?

Did this just abruptly happen? Have you done any work on the bike just before this?

Thanks for the reply!

Nope! None of them work. Left, Right, or holding them both.

I haven't really dont any work recently. This has been happening for about a year, it just bugs me that much finally.

So I wanted to bump this and ask advice for a piece replacement.

Is there any modern aftermarket kits that work plug in play and actually, ya know, work?

Or should I just try to find an old TSM and hope it works? Or do they still make them?

I think my bike is fine but it's just too annoying to deal with this anymore.

Cheers.

Did you do any diagnostic testing?

Do the Turn Signals work when WARM? (you only mention cold)

Did you check the signals (voltage) at the TS connector?

-or- are you just going to throw another part in there?

For 1997-2003 the TS Module is part number 68540-96.

The TS Connector (on the wire harness) has these wires/signals:
1 - BLACK wire - Ground
2 - ORANGE/White - Acc Power In
3 - BROWN - Right TS Flash Out
4 - VIOLET - Left TS Flash Out
5 - WHITE/Green - Speedo Cancel In
6 - no wire
7 - WHITE/Brown - Rt TS Switch IN
8 - WHITE/VIOLET - Lt TS Switch IN

You may need a helper for the extra hands.
Disconnect the cable from the TSM. Turn the Keyswitch ON. Then test the cable connector:

With a multimeter, put the BLACK PROBE on Pin1 and use the RED PROBE to:
A) check for power on Pin2,
B) check Pin 7 to see if it gets power from the Rt TS Switch (when pressed),
C) check Pin 8 to see if it gets power from the Lt TS Switch (when pressed).

With a jumper wire from Pin2 (if it has power)
D) jumper it to Pin3 to see if both Right TS lights are ON,
E) jumper it to Pin4 to see if both Left TS lights are ON.

THOSE TESTS do not check the TS Module - they check that everything connected to the TS Module DOES OR DOES NOT WORK. If all that works, then the TS Module is suspect.

This 100%

Well I figured if I got a plug n play swap, if the problem persisted, it would tell me if it was or wasn't the TSM. But also looking at the part I someday might need a more modern replacement. Next time I have the seat off I'll take a look at it again.

Does it work when warm?

Yup without fail.

Also during the cold I've noticed that if I push the turn signal (left or right) a bunch of times in a row it will turn on.

Do you mean cold/hot ambient air temps? or are we talking about the engine being cold or hot (cold/hot air around the engine)?

During hot temps, you can use cold spray on the TSM to see if you can make it fail, proving it is bad. Or, during cold temps, use a hair dryer on the TSM to see if you can make it start working again.

In both these cases, it sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

Not that the TS Module never fails, but they are quite hearty and I would suspect (and diagnose) other things first.

Temperature.

55 has been lowest morning I think so far.

Hot is like 70+ I suppose.

The engine itself can start up just fine with a little help from the choke.

My point was whether the TSM is failing due to _ITS_ temperature - and that you can test that by using the opposite temperature with either cold spray or hair dryer...
