there's always the chance there was a small bit of metal or grit embedded into the seat. If that was the case trying to fix the seat by "Tapping" a ball in there may make it worse. And might make it impossible to lap the seat in correctly.

At that point you cut a new seat or buy a new housing.
No trash inside the pump housing. Going to try lapping it one way or another next.

Is the pump drive shaft well centered so the seal in the body is able to keep the return separated from the feed? And the seal in good condition?

Is oil actually leaking past the check ball? You are checking it by leaving the hose off the barb?

Quite a lot of oil can leak past the check ball and owners never notice.

It might only be a drop every now and again but over time it would surprise you to see what it adds up to.
But the system will return the oil once the engine is fired up so if you don't let the bike sit too long you never see a problem.

I have read here that k model used a check ball with a tail like that.i have parts books back to '53 and they're not shown there.round only.

the ''old'' evo pushrod idea for lapping is interesting,but why not use a new one with 0 wear.the idea is to get the seat perfectly round isn't it?

Ideally it's like a valve seat, well it is a valve seat it just doesn't have to deal with the heat.

You WANT a narrow sealing area, so that debris is less likely to get caught. A large curved seat will have more surface to catch some little bit and unseal the ball.

Ferrous, you ever go over to NZ?? I'm going to be going over there in about a month.... First time in the Southern Hemisphere for this guy.

Well guys, I think the wetsumping mystery is at least partially explained.... Kind of feel like a dumbass after making this discovery, but hey, we've all been there at some point right?

The outside front bolt going through the pump and into the UL case passes DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF where the IH checkball would originally seat..... Can't believe I didn't realize that already during this journey at some point....

So, even though Dick didn't mention this in his writeup, I guess it is fairly obvious that the chekballs in the original BTSV feed pump are retained...... Well I took them out, not realizing that the IH checkball could no longer be used..... So, hopefully using those checkballs there is all that is required.......

However, I am trying to negotiate the purchase of another BTSV feed pump to proceed ahead with this, the one I have is cracked and otherwise pretty xxxxered..... Hoping I can buy another BTSV feed pump body in better condition, modify it accordingly, and get back on track here.

I appreciate everyone weighing in here, and I will of course continue to update as I slog through this ordeal.......

This BTSV is a bitchin machine and of course ultimatley what spawned the K and every subsequent sportster with many similarities including the four cam design.... But damn, messing around with this BTSV REALLY, REAAAAAAAALLLLLLYYYY makes me appreciate my EVO 1200 Sporty chopper...... That thing is bulletproof.
