Default 1960 XLCH in the UK

Hi All,

I decided to combine my love of classic bikes with a penchant for customs.
So I bought a 1960 XLCH as its the same age as I am.
It has the looks I wanted, completely non standard of course, and needs a complete "recover".
Although an engineer by trade this engine is unlike anything else I,ve worked on and the manual is a must lol.
To that end I,ve started this thread in the hopes that the more experienced out there will bestow thy wisdom upon me.
I,d like to attach a "start" image but this site won,t let me - YET, I hope.
Its already in a million bits and I have questions.
But, lets see what response I get before I go wild!

Well, the FIRST question would be - why does my little box bottom right say I MAY NOT post attachments? and I have no "attachment management" button (see FAQ) and I,ve been in the POST REPLY.
Its like you don,t trust me or something (snuffle snuffle)

You have to make a certain number of posts before you can upload pictures, not sure how many but it’s only 5 or 10.

Where in the UK are you? I have a ‘68 which I imported a few years ago and have slowly been getting roadworthy. Ask if you need any parts as I’ve got quite a collection now!

So, before I close for the night, here's the starter question.


My XLCH cam gear cover has Torrington 3 x bh177 and 1 b118 needle rollers in instead of the (manual) stated bronze bushes.
It has nice little bronze thrust washers in between the cams and the rollers and nothing seems to be the worse for it.
Is this recognised mod? or just a bodge? The casing is the correct pt no and has a casting plate '59 so should be correct
Saves on reaming I guess.

Gearbox is out already then. Have you found the technical stickies? The hardest stumbling block I’ve come across is the many, many small variations in parts which in some cases make a big difference. And who knows whether what came out of it in the first place was original? All good fun of course.

that's a recognized mod by hot rodders to reduce friction.similar to the ball bearings used in KR/XLR motors.result is noisier valve train without the bronze bushings.

Back again.
So is it worth keeping in or should I replace them with bushes?
The frame has some extra bracing too, quite well done and that will be staying.
This bike had a hard time I feel … it also has an external oil filter mod and an oil cooler nailed on the side !
