Default 2002 XL883R, 2 questions with few answers

Hey all,

First time here, I'm looking for some information after hours of scouring the net which only returned a bunch of new questions.

I've recently come into possession of a very awesome '02 XL883R. Its a great bike, and I love it.

You can probably guess the problems I'm having, since its an '02. First off: I want to put forward controls on it, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Secondly: I'd like to put Vance and Hines sideshots on it, but they don't make them.

My two queries kind of go together. I've read threads about putting sideshots on rigid mount sportys, and I've read threads about putting forward controls on them.

Basically I guess what I'm wondering is, if I do these both at the same time, will it make it easier? (because the stock 2 into 1 exhaust is in the way of the forward controls and the stock forward control's master cylinder is in the way of the side shots.)

Any constructive help is very much appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time.

The side shots won't fit due to the rear master cylinder on your bike, it will get in the way. biknut has a thread where he swapped out a new MC for that one and was able to put side shots on his bike

You should be able to find a set of forwards fairly easy

First off Welcome to the Forum from Spartan Country Michigan!
The forward controls are fairly simple to install. Get yourself an owners manual AND a parts manual. it will provide pics and instructions on how things go together....and come apart. The sprocket cover must come off to remove the bolt that holds the right foot peg. The parts manual has exploded views that are very helpful.
Exhaust???? Can't help you there. But make sure you check to make sure forward controls are suitable with the exhaust.

Thanks for the welcome.

Allow me to elaborate on my more important problem.

No one manufactures forward controls for a '02 XL883R because the stock 2 into 1 exhaust is in the way.

The only answer I've found so far is to replace the stock 2 into 1 exhaust with something else. I just really like the Sideshots.

The second problem is Vance and Hines Sideshots are only made for the rubbermount sportsters. The only V&H pipes for the '02 883R that would work would be the striaghtshots.

Refer to the pic of my bike to see what I'm talking about.

I understand your frustration. If you want the look of the sideshots you'll end up doing work to get that look. You can get forwards to fit the bike, and with a little fab skill, you can make your own.

One more thing to worry about: Would sideShots burn your leg if used with foreward controls?

I like your bike the way it is but would have to put a muffler on there and maybe some longer shocks..

Have you thought that maybe your restricting yourself too much. Are sideshots the only pipes you like. There are literally hundreds of pipes out there that would fit your bike without modifications and with forward controls. Pipedreamz makes a number of pipes that would bolt right up to your bike with forward controls. There are others. Look around a little more and make sure you can't find a set of pipes that will bolt up to your bike. Here's a link to Pipedreamz: http://www.pipedreamz.biz/

Thanks for the replies.

I appreciate the complements and as for the shocks I'm putting some progressive 11" or 12" shocks on it I think. Gonna do the progressive fork springs as well, which should give it a very nice ride.

Thanks for info on the pipedreamz stuff too.

Lastly I have just about zero fabrication skills so, unless I make friends with someone who does real soon, there won't be any fabrication of forward controls.

additionally I have seen side shots on a 2004 custom (aka forward controls) no issues as far as fit or burning legs. I'll beat every one hear to the punch and say riding with no rear break is dangerous and a drag pipe set up (sideshots) are a low end power loss
All that bs aside. do what you want, it's your scoot...
haha Thanks for the input but I think I'll try and keep my rear brake. As for the low end power loss, eventually, and I do mean EVENTUALLY, I'm gonna put a 1200 kit or something on it so, more concerned with the way it looks at the moment.

After looking at the pipedreams stuff, I like what they have, but all the stuff they do have that would fit my bike is chrome, and as you can see from the pictures I'm not a chrome fan.

Thanks again. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Read biknots thread, if you havnt already. The sideshot will fit, and while its a LITTLE work to do, its not that bad, and if its the look you want, then its worth it, and the sideshots are not as much a low end power loss as other 2-2 pipes, they have that crossover chamber that seems to do the trick. Get the pipes done, and the forwards should drop in no problem. Tho myself I'd stay with the mids, and add some hyway pegs to strech out on, that's just me tho...
