Default Throttle cable(s)

Out riding with a friend today and his throttle cable broke.
I see the "idle" and "throttle" cables have different part numbers.
Can the idle cable be switched for the throttle cable temporarily?
Had to order the cable and it won't be here til next Thursday.
Any info would be appreciated.
I just don't want to waste tomorrow morning trying to change a cable that won't work. Record hot here today and more tomorrow.
Oh, it's a 2005 XL Custom 883.
Thank you and Thank You to all the veterans here!

It sounds like you would be planning to run the return cable as a single "pull" cable. Even if they are interchangeable, your throttle housing is not designed to run just a single cable. I wanted to ditch the return cable on my 2002, and had to drill out the housing and install a set screw to work as a throttle return stop. Without that , when you close the throttle, it will just keep twisting past the "closed" point. Older housings (in the 90's ?) had a housing with a built-in stop that would allow you to run just a pull cable, even though the Feds have required the redundancy of double cable for a long time.
