Should be a casting line inside the master cyl. About a 1/4" down. Any fluid over that will weep out the vent hole or seep around the gasket.

you might need to replace the membrane. the brake system has to be allowed to equalize with atmospheric pressure, hence the vent hole in the cover but it cannot leak fluid, hence the membrane. the membrane expands and contracts with the fluid level, hence not any ole gasket will work unless it does so and not affected by brake fluid. if you pull the cover and it is gummy and wrinkled, replace it.

Just wondering if there is a top and bottom to this gasket?

paper up
that way the material isn't exposed to the fluid.

Sorry, but the paper goes down. I have worked on many years of HDs. Was a factory trained mechanic for years. Oh, sorry again, I was a "technician ". LOL

and that is why they start to weep after awhile. factory or not, i vote for paper up, never had a weeping issue.
secondary reason is that you can remove the cover several times and re-use and guess what???? paper does not stick because it is on top.
.

side note: if it was that technical, the FSM would specify, it doesn't. your choice.
