Default Oil Cooler and oil filter

I want to install an oil filter on my '77 XLCR rider, which has an Earl's 7-row oil cooler. Is there an accepted place for this item on Ironheads? I know there's no actual "oil pressure" on these machines, and that the filter has to be on the "pumping" side, but otherwise can anyone provide guidance?

+1 mr. brucstoudt

on my 74 i added an external filter (spin on) by converting my left engine mount. i go from the scavenge pump out to filter > to inlet of cooler > return to oil bag.
this way, the filter sees warmer oil to assist in flow through.
my cooler is a ford power steering unit mounted in between the front down tubes behind front fender.

I don't think the XLCR has a filter in the oil tank...

Just don't hook up the filter backwards.

Dirty oil goes in the outside ring of holes, clean oil comes out the center on all spin on filters.

Do not install any filter in the feed line to the pump, bad juju. Cold oil does not flow well and oil pumps don't like to suck, they must have a flooded inlet or they will cavitate.

Indian Larry used to use a large car filter (common PH8A) to increase oil capacity and assist cooling.

72-on Norton Commando spin-on oil filter head is cheap & easy to find/adapt; made a little 'L' bracket to bolt one to the center stand lug on my '64 many, many years ago.

The filter element is very popular/fits many things and available from many suppliers, including Fram, NAPA/Crosland, GM, Ducati (900SS/Monster filters, apparently). Or even Champion (ya, the same folks that make spark plugs).

According to https://www.nortonownersclub.org/sup...do/oil-filters, It'll also accept a genuine Harley oil filter part #63810-80A
