Default cylinder screw torque specs.

Hello all, trying to find out the torque specs for the cylinder screws on my 2000 883 sporty. they're kind of rusty, so I figured I'd changed them. is this pretty straight forward, or not? Thanks

Welcome to the forum.. Let me start off by saying that a service manual is a "must have" if you are planning to do any assembly/disassembly on your bike. There is not only torque specs in them but, most important, torque sequences.

also consider that some fasteners are torque first then so many degrees rotation. this is based of stretch and not torque force which can vary for many reasons and i believe the bolts are such

Except for Evo head bolts. Lube the threads of the bolt and stud, and flange surface, with a light coat of oil. If not, you'll get way undertorque on the head bolts.

Don't overdo it though, no need to hydrolock it.

These do require a thin coating of oil. Key word being thin. And as was mentioned, there's a specific sequence to torqueing these down.
Are you leaving the old gaskets?

if you're talking about the head bolts, those are the 12 point shanked

like these..




then you will need to replace the head gasket at a mininum.


if you're talking about the studs.



like this



then you are going to need base gaskets as well.



the studs also should come with lock patch on them otherwise use a red loctite.



cylinder head bolt torque specifications typically rely on the direction for the head gasket manufacturer.. Cometic, HD, james have their own specs.



if they're just ugly. put a cap on them for a lot less money and headache..

You can only get at two on each cylinder, without removing the rocker box assembly as well. Not worth the trouble unless you have other issues.

I'll bet mine are a lot more rusty than yours, after being on the coast for 29 years. I call it "patina."
