And yes, I was searching for "VOES" (exact text).

Instead, the Service Manual uses "V.O.E.S."



Ugh! Search feature is so literal. I'll take a look here shortly, now that I know where it is.

People have been griping about detonation on 88-03 1200's for over 30 years now.

Hemi chambers have low turbulence, which makes them detonation prone. HD knows this, which is why they all came with a 9:1 compression ratio. But even at that low compression, it's still a problem.

Put modern heads on it. You can raise cylinder pressures, gain torque and power, and have less detonation to match.

Also, an ignition that implements a softer curve will reduce detonation and add power both. I recommend the Dyna 2000i for a 2003, static timed and set on curve 4.

The Super E is a giant step backwards from the stock CV40, in my opinion. You want a carb improvement, get a Mikuni HSR42. It's a modern, state-of-the-art carburetor. But the carb is not the issue here, the heads are the issue.

Ouch! It's probably cheaper just to get a newer motorcycle than buying modern heads and having those installed. So everyone with older Sporsters on here should not be acting surprised.

A Dyna 2000i ignition set to curve 4. I have no idea what that is, but I looked it up and found the Ultima 53-644 like this:

The Ultima is not the same as the Dyna, despite what many people claim. The curves are not the same. The Ultima curves suck. In my opinion. To make it work right, you need the programming kit. Which makes it more expensive than the Dyna.

There is a significant advantage to having a timing curve rather than an on/off switch. If you read the Sportsterpedia section (post 14 link) there are various models of the voes which advance at different vacuum pressures.

My 1200 sport was capable of 59 miles per gallon until it was rejetted and not quite so lean, an advantage from dual plug heads, perhaps w grind cams and a variable timing courtesy of the map sensor.

OTOH, I had no timing issues with my xlh 883 from sea level to 8,000 feet.

Regarding the sportsterpedia section on voes, I think it is a misnomer to refer to the voes as having a timing advance curve since it is not a curve but a single step.

As said already, high octane fuel. My 2003 1200 will ping if I use 93 octane gas, which is the highest I can get here in California. I use Lucas Oil Octane booster every fillup and it stops the ping. I cary a small 2oz bottle of the stuff will me all the time. I have tried everything possible to tune it out but nothing works except higher octane gas.
