Default XL IR EFI to those that asked

60 Weight was asking about one of my ongoing projects.
The IR is for independent runners, EFI I think is self explanatory. Also affectionately known as USS SMS (Boat tail referenced swap meet special). It really is nothing more than a hodgepodge of parts collected over the years that I enjoy tying together with my 12 yr old son. We spend about an hour each eve tinkering a bit when we are not out riding (he is quite the accomplished Mx'er and flat track racer). Someday soon it will run, hopefully with a kickstart. That seems to be our biggest dillema. Hopefully with some creative low RPM initial timing we will be able to boot it to life, if not, adding the e-start is next in line.
Still much more to do prior to putting fuel in it.
Its really nothing special, just a 4 5/8 stroker, with a c box and alot of time wasted on a novelty induction.


Both air cleaners are backed by Branch 44mm backing plates

Not as obtrusive as they appear. Tried to tuck them in fairly similar to factory width. Right side is in place in this pic and can be seen along the side.

Modified +4 swingarm fills tail up nicely ,I think. Tried to use as many factory parts as possible (Brembo obviously is not). Factory alloys with later dual flanged hub, Buchanans HD stainless spokes.
Like I said a hodgepodge for sure, cheap swap meet parts.... time spent with JR, PRICELESS!

I really like seeing a project like this and the ingenuity it takes to make it happen.

The intake spigots and runners are very well done. Is the long length a performance consideration or just for a convenient place to put the air cleaners? I like that the cams remain in their original positions but it must have been a trick to bolt a front rocker cover to a turned around rear head.

Will you drill new oil drains in the front cylinder to line up with the head or use external?

100% talk is cheap. Just a project until the pipes get warm. As for a true IH rider, up until 2 years ago I didnt even own a car and for the first 20 something years of that 30 year stint, my 64 was my rider. I rode (still ride) and still jump it every chance I get. This last rebuild easily has 150K + on it and I have wrenches and machine tools for the next rebuild. When Im gone, Jr can step up to the plate. The Sunnen is on the list for the next lesson for him in the shop.

Nothing special. Just two rears with some mods to get the rocker box on it. And some intake flange mods to mount the intakes.

The intakes actually terminate just after the throttle bodies with a radius, the ducting is larger than the intake after that point. It actually slips over the stack and seals with an internal o-ring to keep the debris out. yes the ducting gets a place for the riders leg.
There was some work to get the rocker on there, but wasnt terribly difficult.
external drains are in order once the remaining pieces (injectors, dual throttle cables, MAP sensor bungs ect) are in place.

SC, Factory gold cup in the nose cone for cam signal, 32-1 chopper wheel in the primary area where a comp spring set up would have lived.
I looked into the mega cycle a while back, but I had the luxury of obtaining some other candidates. ECU is Motec. I have a M84 and also M800. I am leaning more to the 800 as it has a bit more options. Perhaps if I cannot use a kickstart and need to put in a clutch basket with a ring gear, the 800 has a traction control option. The ring gear looks like a good candidate for a clutch signal. I prefer to try to make the kicker work though.
Close on the tank. That is an early Superglide tank. It has a large flat surface area underneath where I will weld in a flange for a FI sportster pump/reg assembly.
Its become quite the project, and thats all it is until it runs, but it sure is fun having a tool fetcher that likes to learn. I need to finish it up before he becomes a teenager and realizes he hates hanging with his folks!
