Default On starting a new thread

Just been following yet another thread where it seems the posts go on forever as members try to tease out information about a posters problem.

It is fun to try and guess why someone's bike does something without basic knowledge the whole thing can be tedious.

It would be really great if the posters could just provide basic facts like the year of the bike/engine, what work has been done immediately prior to the posting, when the bike/engine last ran correctly, what the poster hopes to achieve, what All of the symptoms are and when they first appeared.

A simple template might make it easier for everybody. Just a thought.

Maybe that's too much to ask. I'll go back to my Bourbon now.

I really shouldn't get on my high horse but a little more common xenxe and effort by posters could save a lot of "back and forth."

And if all the pertinent info was on the 1st post of a problem you wouldn't have to back and re-read the post 6 times to work out what you need to know about the problem.

As long as I'm whinging:

I really don't understand people who want to work on engines when all they own is a pair of pliers and a screwdriver.

Save hundreds of dollars by not taking it to a dealer but won't turn loose on 30 bucks to buy a compression gauge.

And at the bare minimum you need a bigger hammer.

I also build and repair guitar amps. On forums, we usually post templates with measured voltages. It really helps solve problems.

Some of us post our specs, even the oil we use, in our signs. A simple thing to do and always there yet I see none of you that have posted in this thread have done so either.

Not to be critical, just an observation and possible solution to at least knowing specs

A lot of threads seem to be more like a game of 20 questions. Responses get posted with possible (and some implausible) causes, instead of an initial well-written background to the problem. The end result is usually a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Sometimes I think the lack of detail is just not having been exposed to the basic mechanical underpinnings of old iron. We live in a world where machinery that's computer controlled, uses OBD-II scanners and has idiot lights that indicate malfunctions is the norm. Analog problems in a digital world...
