Later 85 STD piston rings
I need a little help, cannot find the correct piston ring set. Hastings part number 7003 was ordered and is for an early 85 and I need the set for late 85 with the 5/32 oil expander ring, part # 6166.
I have been searching and cannot find the set. Can I order just the 5/32 oil expander ring for the 3 3/16 standard bore pistons?
Thanks,
David

Looking at the Factory Parts Catalog, the Late 85 piston ring sets are...
22260-83 standard
22261-83 0.01 O.S. Presumably OverSize
22262-83 0.02 O.S.
22263-83 0.03 O.S.
22264-83 0.04 O.S.
22265-83 0.005 O.S Misprint? I do not know.
A Google search for 22260-83 turned up this on eBay...

I looked at the Hastings master catalog. The compression ring styles are different in the two sets, with one ring for the later piston having different dimensions.
Based on that, unless someone has actually used early rings on late pistons with success, I’d say no.

22260-83 rings were also used on the standard bore XR1000. I've been looking for a NOS set, just for insurance. They're not common. I didn't gather from this post that there's an aftermarket alternative - right?

Yes there is.
Hastings 6166 (plain cast ring) or 2M 6166. (Moly top ring)
6166 is standard size, 6166010 is .010” oversize and so on.
Might not find a lot of new retail stock. There is prob some on eBay or direct from Hastings rings.

^^ Maxeffort's info is right on.
I never knew that there was ever an ironhead that had 5/32 oil rings. It's easy to see how you could get the wrong rings because when doing a search for 1000cc rings, '72 - '85, almost every parts supplier only offered ring sets with the 3/16 oil ring.
Further confusing is the Hastings catalog that lists both ring sizes for 1985. I guess you have to know if you have an early or late '85.
See page 104.

Summit Racing looks like it's a good source for these rings. At least they tell you exactly what you're getting.
