XL1200S somewhere north of 35000 on the belt the odo gave up years ago.... I broke a belt cruisin down US1 in big pine where its 35 at night, acted like it popped out of gear.... coasted into the turn, a couple blocks more and the next turn turn and into my driveway
walked a couple blocks back and there was the belt lying on the road... ordered a 530 o'ring chain and stock, -1T and -2T countershaft runnin down one now and goin to down 2 shortly when i put on the 140/80-18 rear tire (mounted on a 2012 XR1200X front rim)... there's no place to ride fast but you can really hang the backend out as there's really only a couple paved roads... all the rest are sand and marbles...

belt
I accidentally tapped the gearshift with my foot (very lightly) and the bike dropped down a gear and the belt broke. I replaced it myself just yesterday and will test drive it today. I think its a real pain in the ass.

these do not tolerate oil at all.
rarely loan out the machine but i let a friend use it to go get parts and he graciously topped off the bag before he brought it back. few days later i took it to the next town and i rode hard. i came out of the store put it in gear and it went a few feet ant stopped, tried again and the same, then i noticed oil down the side and onto the belt, teeth stripped out. apparently while riding the was enough toothing to keep rolling but not enough for a take off. bummer, had about 15k on it.

Damn, could only happen to me. Yesterday I got the HotRod bike off the lift and outside, sure looked pretty in the bright sunlight. Road a quarter mile down to the Marathon gas station and filled up with fresh premium. Clutch was dragging a bit, new cable, so ran for home to fine tune the cable. Lost forward momentum and coasted nearly home, pushing the last 50 yards as the drive belt had snapped and was hanging off the rear pulley. She’s inside and back up on the lift so today I’ll install the new one, (it’s in an original box), and do a clutch cable adjustment. Everybody keeps a spare belt on hand, right?

I've got a new one sitting here... and a clutch cable and throttle cables.
