Tomcatt,
A few points:
1) There's no profit in Youtube. I've made 63 videos and grossed a grand total of about $700. That's less than minimum wage.
2) My videos are based on my articles in national magazines like Rider, where I formally publish my reviews. I'm not paid there, either. It's a labor of love.
3) I got my start writing from all the products I was reviewing for my 1998 XL1200C. Old timers on this forum will remember this bike https://mklsportster.com/mkls-harley...998-july-2006/

But you do get PAID.
I notice that most of your "contribution" to this forum is promotion of your youtube channel and providing links to it.
I won't be clicking on them.

Myself, I appreciate the information provided, whether paid or not, and have used some of it to my own advantage. Thank you.

I think there's some confusion here about payment. Payment, in and of itself, is not the issue. What I think folks are concerned with is WHO is doing the paying! I think it's correct to be concerned about "reviews" that are paid for (or sponsored) by the manufacturer of the goods. That's a conflict of interest. That's not what I'm doing.
I have been publishing product reviews in national magazines such as Rider, MCN, American Iron (now gone,) etc. for 16 years. Like every other journalist on earth, I am paid for my articles by the magazines I write for. I'm NOT paid by the manufacturers. My videos are simply me basically reading my articles over video feed I shoot. There's no money in it. I do it because I love to do it. My articles can be seen here https://mklsportster.com/the-articles-publications/
As for my contributions here, if you don't see them, it's because you haven't gone back far enough. I was here when this was the XL list in the late 1990s, and got my start in publishing because editors saw the product reviews I was posting right here, when this forum was very young. In fact, my very first publication was a solution I proposed for Evo Sportsters which used to puke oil out of the intake assembly, back in 2003. This is that post which I archived - https://mklsportster.com/mkls-98-120...-phenomenon-2/ - I still love Sportsters today and that's why I'm still here.

Yes, my post was not quite correct.
Your "Statistics" show 84 posts under this name.
77 are in your threads promoting your reviews or reports.
7 are in your "remember me?" thread.
You have ZERO posts (under this name) not promoting your reviews/reports or yourself.
I was wrong when I said only most of your posts did that.

No, the issue is that you're on a forum, a place of discussion, and you're making zero attempt to start a discussion here. The prerequisite for any on-topic discussion is us being forced to leave this site, do something that can result in your compensation, and then coming back here to discuss the video despite your lack of involvement here to begin with. Nobody cares how much you make. The issue is that with a thread like this, you are using people as a tool rather than being legitimately active here.
I have no problem with somebody getting paid for their videos if the views come organically. Or even if you're out there promoting yourself without just dumping like this. If you're farming views on a forum and hoping people will watch, without actually being a part of the forum itself, you're abusing this platform and the opposition is fully justified.
If I want to watch some guy's review for a product I'm interested in, I'll end up finding it without the dumping and self-promotion. I don't come here to see if anyone has made a video review. I go to a place for videos and find one. If someone cares to discuss their thoughts on a product within the forum itself, sure, I may read through it.
That's the issue. If people are going to insist on starting a new thread with a link to one of their videos, they need to at least make an attempt to be active here and contribute to discussion here. That attempt needs to be made right off the bat. Not if someone replies to their thread. This is the type of discussion I fully expect with these threads now. I don't expect contributions. I expect hostility at the link dump.

That's a rather bizarre way of seeing things, in my opinion. Why would you assume I wouldn't discuss? I'm happy to discuss. I'm not starting discussions in the main Sportster forums because I don't own one at the moment. I lurk there to learn what's going on with the newer ones - mine was an EVO and that's what I'm most familiar with. I'm really just confused at the hostility, though. Why assume that anything negative is intended or that I'm not happy to discuss my experiences in testing a given piece of gear?

FWIW I'm kind of interested in a new helmet and appreciate reviews and opinions of the people on this site. The thread title had me hoping for your thoughts on the helmet in the title and instead it's just a link to a video. I appreciate the time it takes to make videos and that you're trying to drive some viewers your way, and I'm okay with that. In the future, though, adding the highlights of your video (likes and dislikes, is it a value or a waste) to the initial post here would probably have avoided this entire discussion and may have kept it on track discussing the helmet and your thought of it.
It's much easier (and faster!) to read a quick review than it is to watch a video, especially when d*cking off at work.
I feel the claims of your not wanting to have a discussion is caused by the lack of one to start the thread.
So...what'd you think of the helmet, would you recommend it to a friend, and would you buy it again? Kyle
