I am about ready to rebuild my tranny and was wondering if you need the bearing install tool to put the bearing in the right case for the mainshaft?

Does anybody have any info on the procedure for replacing the shifter shaft on my 89 4 speed trans. The splines on mine are stripped, does the trans need to come out in order to do this?

Yes the trans must go out. You should get a repair manual, it's the easiest way to do things..

question regarding trans sprocket. Im in the process of converting my 87 sportster to a wide gear ratio as mentioned in post #1. I bought a 23 tooth trans sprocket and was gonna leave the rear 48 tooth. Problem is the chain is too small, and i noted if i were able to install the 23 tooth sprocket i would have clearance issues with the chain. could i run the stock 21 tooth trans sprocket with the 48 rear, just temp will i get a new chain or a different size sprockets?

To use a 23 front sprocket you'll need to deemed some material away, but a 22 will fit OK. I found a 22/48 ratio to work best for me, but I don't do a lot of freeway miles. The 22/47 combo was a bit too high for me.

Best tip is to hang some vice grips off the shaft when reinstalling to keep it oriented.

Awesome info on the original post. I came across this a year ago as I was rebuilding the motor while chopping my 90 sportster. Got it all together now as I also used all the info posted on here. There is now a significant difference in top end speeds.

question regarding the mainshaft 2nd gear and countershaft 3rd gear. are there any differences between them. i know both are 23 tooth but one seems thicker and the spacing between the dogs are clearly different. which one is which?
