The problem is that is occurs ONLY in 4th gear and NO OTHER gear.

i don't think it's anything to worry about. Mine does it too (only in 4th also) My cousins XL does the same thing. I was on a ride with another guy who had a Sportser, his did it too. The years ranged from '96 to '04.

That's all I wanted to know. Maybe I should have done a poll instead. I'll get back to riding her now. Only way to find out if it's a problem is to ride her and see if it fails.

To chime in here...my '05 certainly has the 4th gear whine. Definitely more noticeable with the windshield. I am used to it now and like FireMedic said...it's kinda like a built in gear counter.

So far it's an observation and not an issue. I have been doing some searches and it seems 04-05 touring bikes also whine in 4th gear. Some of them have 20K+ mi. on them and all is still fine. Since the 06 bikes have completely different transmissions, it is highly unlikely their transmissions would behave the same.

Gawd damn... you learn something new everyday here at the XL Forum !!!!

I don't think I've ever heard it, but I'll have to listen for it now. I'm usually too busy singing to myself by the time I hit 4th to hear anything.

My bike only has four gears: should I be worried?
