The times, they are a changin'.... I can remember when "regular" meant low octane gas. Now - around here, at least - it means non-ethanol. Gas used to have lead, then it had no lead but it does have corn which is less efficient and gives less mpg in the name of technical advancement. We pay more, to get less, and we can't even leave the stuff in our gas tanks for too long because it absorbs water and damages seals and other parts.

I use regular, regular in my older bike which fortunately, is not so old as to need hardened valve seats to protect the engine from non-leaded gas, whether it is "regular" or "premium". For you youngsters out there, when the government mandated non-leaded fuel in all gasoline powered vehicles made in 1975 and later, all of the engines made earlier than that suffered damage from the new fuel because the evil lead additive actually protected the valve seats. There was no substitute added to the gas to help the engines from damage. "We are from the government and we are here to help you."

Not exactly.

Tetraethyllead was phased out because it was incompatible with catalytic converters. They knew it was bad for the environment when they first used it in the 1920s.

It's hard to find good 91 octane here in Norther Colorado. My bike chatters on hard throttle otherwise. I put 2ozs of Gumout Octane boost every fillup and the chattering is minimized as well as gives it a robust idle.

I've started using 91 or 93 (whichever they have) since Hammer Time.
It really does rattle if you get on it with low grade.
Better power with the good juice.

Yup it poisoned the platinum catalyst. Lots of older cars got killed in the process of phasing it out. Always is a racket that's for sure. Picking the winners and losers. Consumers are usually the losers.

Here there are stations with that have non-EtOH. Problem is that 3.3 gallon tanks don't allow much choice because the stations aren't common.

Iv just tried 99 over my usual 95 and what I suspected was pinging at 60+ mph ( hard to be sure due to wind noise) has stopped , it could be me but the bike just seems quieter all round ..
