So you think i can get away with another hone and new rings?
Or do i stick to what the machinist says? I could feel a big difference with my fingernail 0.2" under the firering. Also when putting in the pistons to check for ring end gap they had to go in exactly how they are set when mounted. So i assume the cylinders are egg shaped?!

No. Not if your machinist is correct.

This is why we measure things. If your machinist knows how to measure a bore, bore it to the correct size and do a decent hone job it will fix your problems.

If he knows what the size of the pistons are that are in there now and he can measure accurately he will be able to tell you how much bigger the bores need to be to get them back into tolerance.

I believe he's already done that and told you that you need to go up to +060 to bring the bores back into tolerance.

If you don't believe your machinist take them somewhere else. Get a second opinion if you want to.

But that edge at the top of the bore near the fire ring ?

That's the unworn part of the bore. The rings don't go all the way to the top of the bore and they leave an unworn section. What your feeling is how much the bore has worn since they were last bored/honed.

If there is a step in the top of the bore it can break new pistons when the square edge of a new ring meets the worn edge of the step.

Bad JuJu for sure. Listen to your machinist he has to guarantee his work.

I just gave you a second opinion.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

Make sure to clean everything "white glove inspection ready" when you get it back. Is he fitting the rings for you too?

Make sure your stuff rags around your rods at the spigot hole to prevent unfriendlies from taking refuge in your crankcase. Like a wrist pin circlip for example. You;ll be upset otherwise.
