hello, i recently put new steels and fibre disks in my 73 xlh. all is fairly good but i am still tinkering with the adjustment to get it spot on. i have found since owning an ironhead that theory doesnt always succeed in a practical sense. there is a lot in fine tuning and tweaking to get the required result. what works for one motor may not work for another. experience is a wonderful thing with an old ironhead... my question is on the clutch engagement screw (how much free play is desired?) 0 a fraction so it has slight free play?? more so it has a lot??? i understand that it cant slop around like excessively, is there a point that i can aim for. maybe i simply go thru the process of doing it, riding and doing it and riding untill i get the smoothest all round result?? thats cool if thats what is called for. what i have noticed is that at times there is a very slight delay in finding gear after changing and by this time the clutch lever is released and it isnt ideal. not too often but once is too much. ideas would be great.. thanks

73HEAD, you'd probably get better results starting your own thread. But here's my three-step process to perfect clutch adjustment. THIS ASSUMES all the components in your primary case are working correctly! If your clutch bearings are shot or the ramp assembly is crushed (both have happened to me) you need to fix those first!

1. Lubricate your clutch cable! Unless you have one of the fancy lined ones this is a routine maintenance item.

2. Lubricate your clutch handle! Rustoleum makes a PTFE spray I really like for this. Made a HUGE difference in my attempts to dial in the clutch. Also reduced clutch effort significantly.

Easy as that. If the clutch adjustment doesn't fix your shifting problem, my next step would be to look at the transmission.

I use TriFlow to lube cables.
Very light weight and does not gum up.
Has Teflon for the slippery.
It has a happy smell.

I use it on all cables new and old lined or unlined.
