Default 1979 XLH Carb

What is the best new replacement carb for an old Ironhead nowadays? Opinions?

And is my old worn-out Keihn a 38mm or a 40mm?

34mm if I remember correctly. That's the year they went down from 38mm.

They are good carbs, I might rejet and rebuild. Save a lot of bucks, anyhow.

I had a screamin eagle racing carb put on my '73xlh on recomendation from a local Indy who was also pres of an MC at the time. Really knew the older bikes. He set it up and I have to say the thing just screamed. Perfect color on the plugs thru out too.

If you just wanna make her into a rider again just rebuild the one ya got,
I rebuilt the Keihin butterfly on my 82 xls and it runs great, besides burnin alittle oil but that’s my issue.
Just make sure there’s not a lot of slop/play in the throttle shaft (source of vacuum leak) and she should be a good core for a rebuild, kits are cheap, save yourself alittle $.

When the throttle shaft on my old butterfly got to loose to hold a steady idle i shit canned it and put on a CV.
It's much better all around, starting, riding, tuning, mileage, and parts are everywhere for them as well as upgrades.

All above are good suggestions. As far as spare on the shelf carbs go. My fav is s&s super b.

KISS is pretty hard to beat.

I’ve got a S&S Super E on my ‘79. I dig it because it looks cool and it’s so simple and easy to work on and tune. A lot of Ironhead guys seem happy upgrading to the CV 40 carbs which is more cost effective than the S&S. I’ve had both on different bikes. Both will do the job.
