I agree. I've never done an install, only watched vids and read about them. Your front intake and exhaust look off. I looked at my service manual and the dots on 3 and four line up slightly differently than yours. Almost as if 3 was placed too low meeting 2. Resulting in 3 and 4 dots being slightly too high. I don't know, maybe its the picture. Again, I've never done an install. Just comparing it to pics and a video I just watched.

It is partially the pic but you're right. Number 3 was off a tooth. Thing is, all 4 never look completely lined up at the same time and 2&3 are the toughest with no tooth to see on 3. But number 3 was off making 4 off as well. Number 4 being off was the problem causing the valve to piston contact. It's always the exhaust that will hit the piston. Pulled 2 out a little and rotated 3 up a tooth. 4 moved with it. Slid 2 back in and good.
Here's what blows my mind tho. That valve hit that piston good. But it hit it straight on. I just tested it again after talking to Dan. That valve is not bent at all. It doesn't even seep brake clean after 5 minutes of leaving it in that port. Talk about lucky. Piston is fine. All is fine. Throwing it back together.
Up until yesterday seeing that valve wasn't bent I could've sworn those cams were in right. But pulling the cover and having them look at the pics and play with a set of cams I found out otherwise.
Lesson learned. Always double check each gear with the next with a straight edge cuz sometimes looking at the dots can be deceiving.

Glad you found it.

What really helps when looking at marks is to make sure the mark on the pinion gear is pointing straight toward the center of the #2 cam. When it's off even a little bit, like in your pic, it makes it real easy to get fooled.

You're right. It is. You think rotate that a little and all is good. For some reason that mark always ends up slightly off like that too. At least the 3 times now I've pulled this down.

Just about got the head torqued down. Hit them all at 42 yet and if the storms hold off a couple hours I'll be taking her for a spin and tuning the carb. I've tore it down so many times I can do it in my sleep now. I'm pumped to feel the power. ;p

Thanks. One more tip of tbe day...dont start torqueing your head down without the pushrods tubes in place! Hah! Just realized it after torqueing them to 35.

Man, you would not believe how many times I had to take heads back off, after the rubber mount bikes came out. Old habits die hard. I kept making that mistake for years.

Yeah and after the 1st or 2nd time you could just smack yourself along side the head, huh.
I know the feeling. You get too comfortable doing things a certain way and the older we get...

I doubt I'll get it on the road. Storms are blowin' in. Got the motor buttoned up but still got all the other stuff. Intake/carb takes a bit to get ligned up perfect and hooked up. Fuel tank, coil, and whatever else and I'm taking an old man that's hurting break. I picked the first day in 80s this spring and I'm sweating my ass off so.
I may get her fired up but that would be it.
