Default Fuel Pump Problems

Looking at Bern's thread about her bike not starting got me to thinking about possible problems with the sporty fuel pump. If there are enough problems, HD is gonna have to do something. Whether that is to replace the pump with a different one or find out why they are failing. So, how many people have had fuel pump problems and what was the mileage?

Considering how relatively rare fuel pump problems are on cars, trucks, boats and bikes, what makes us think that there are going to be issues with the Sportys pumps?

I have been following Bern's thread and there are a few people that have reported their fuel pump being faulty. I figured I'd make a poll to find out how many for sure. I've only lost one fuel pump in a vehicle so I know they aren't usually a problem. But when you have several people loosing them with low miles....

Because there have been 3-4 people reporting theirs have been replaced so far in the Nightster Forum.
It seems strange that they are having problems with the fuel pumps. Does anyone know who manufactures the pumps?

Best Regards,
Norm

From the other thread, which should be sticky, it looks like it's only the newer bike just off the line. A manufacturing defect in a handful of bikes. Some line worker somewhere had a bad day.

I guess we have to look at the size of the pool. (i.e. how many new EFI bike owners do we have here, vs. how many are reporting problems).

Sure it may be possible a bad batch got through, but regardless, anything that new, it's still warranty, so Harley is obviously aware of it too.

Does any one know if the efi sporty uses the same pump as the new 96' bikes?
