Talking Suspension pointers

Have been reading through the suspension sticky. Sooo much info. Think I may be getting burnt out on it. Anywho, I am wanting to start working on the suspension on my 2016 XL1200V. It is all stock (suspension wise) at the moment.
Current rider "comfort" changes on bike:
16inch narrow apes
Roland Sands 2-up Boss seat (daily riding up to 500 miles)
Sundowner seat for 500+ mile days.

I will be installing a fork brace from superbrace...once I order it.

me:
235lbs, 5'7" short with about a 28" inseam. Don't really care about "flatfooting" the bike though.

Riding style:
long distance cruising, with aggressive cornering. Actually did an Iron Butt this year on stock suspension, with the sundowner seat and 16in apes lol.

What I am asking for:
What with the bike having the cartridge in one fork and standard springs in the other. What would be the honest "recommended" for suspension on the front? Yes, I get that it can vary depending on rider, but where abouts should I start?

For the rear, should I hop on the bike, and have a friend do some measurements of the frame and the swingarm. Try and figure out what I need for rider sag "height" of a shock setup, then go from there for overall length? Or should I start somewhere else?

Kinda feel like I have learned just enough to shoot myself in the balls, but not enough to castrate myself properly lol

Try websites like Progressive Suspension, Revzilla, etc. They not only sell the stuff but also give good advise on what kind of ride your looking for. It also helps to know what it's going to cost you, too.

Welcome to the forums from Indiana!

Start with what you think needs to be "improved", what do you find lacking in the stock suspension? Travel? Bottoming out? etc.

HD offers an adjustable compression/rebound front fork and rear shocks.

Thanks for the tips. I new about the HD stuff.....but after all the headache I and my friends have had with the local HD stealership....was hoping not to go that way..haha, this being said, from what I have looked at for the front end at least, the HD may be the way to go....maybe.

so many decisions lol

oh I'm from Idaho.

http://www.dkcustomproducts.com/ has suspension components. You might give them a call.
