Now I can’t get it back to where it was(it was working pretty good). Without taking off the primary cover, I just can’t tell when the ball bearings are seated in the inner and outer detentes. Is there a trick for this? As I have it, the throw is too long and the bearings pop out of their seats and I hear a “pop” then no clutch…

A wise mechanic guy use to say, if you have 1 3/4" valve, why choose a carb with a bigger mouth. A 1.8" intake valve is 45mm so if you go bigger than that you just loose ''sucking power''; his term.

You have two 1 3/4 valves (or whatever size you choose as an example). To carry the example to a more extreme point, V-8s don't use 1 barrel carbs.
The size of the carb is more closely related to the horsepower the motor will deliver, rather than the size of the intake valve.
With all that said, charge velocity is IMPORTANT.

How much air will a 45 mm intake port flow in CFM ?
How much air will a carb with a 45mm venturi in a carb flow ?

I use piniongear's clutch adjustment method and it's never steered me wrong. Still a PITA to find neutral if I'm not rolling though /shrug. http://xlforum.net/forums/showpost.p...7&postcount=73
