Default XL/XR mutt video and Barnett clutch adjustment

Hello all - I have a Barnett Scorpion clutch in the 1981 bottom end of my XL/XR mutt. I can't get it adjusted so it will completely disengage. I've tried adjustment at the clutch hub through the primary cover and adjustment where the cable enters the cover. I've had it adjusted so there is just a tiny bit of travel at the lever just to see if I get get it to fully disengage. I had it adjusted with the engine off so it will to roll in gear but now that it's running it won't disengage to allow me to stop in gear. There must be a technique that I'm missing.

Here's a video of it running. I fired it up yesterday - the first time I've had it running on both cylinders. It sounds rough as I haven't had time to sort the twin Mikunis out.

The 1981 and later IronHeads have a different clutch and a different adjustment procedure than the earlier models. I think that no adjustment is possible where the cable enters the cover.

Do you have the FSM 99484-85? It has the correct procedure.

Thanks Mick. The FSM, now in front of me, in front of me would have been a good place to start. 1979 through early '84 uses the adjusting sleeve just to get rid of cable slack. I had been using it in conjunction with the adjusting screw to try to try and get proper adjustment. Thanks for pointing me to where I should have started.

I think that is Late84 up has a different clutch release....

Causes for clutch drag,

- bad cable (lube or replace)
- damaged clutch disc(s)
- crushed or missing sleeves
- non-oem spring(s)
- fat grips or covers on the levers (decreasing lever travel)
- over-filled trans oil or wrong oil

#1 cause for clutch issues is poor adjustment

The push rod adjustment adjusts the clutch to the release mechanism.
The cable adjustment sets the lever free play.
