Default SPRINGER Front End JUST RIGHT CHOPPER HEIGHT?

Greetings Fellow Forum Members,

On my last bike I installed a -2" length DNA Springer which set a perfect level stance with the 21" BT wheel.

I inserted a photo of it below.

This time I'm going to go with a better TC Brothers unit complete with front damper shock on it on my new bike an immaculate 2001 XL883 Custom with a 1250 kit plus a ton of other supporting components.

According to the chart below at "stock" length a Springer would impart a 2" lift on what I had before.

At +2" that would be a 4" lift over what I had before.

At +4' that's a 6" lift over what I had going on below.

So my objective is to end up with an elevated front end that looks perfect and right on the bike. Not like the over done extended front ends of the 70's but a more artistically esthetic balance to the bike. Up and elevated but perfect looking to the bike.

(Q). So is the +4" springer going to be too much or just go with the +2".

Took The Step.......


Went with a +2" which will give the bike a 4" lift over what's pictured below.

Didn't want to take a chance in going too tall and it looking geekd=ed. So its all good now.

I put +2 tubes in my ‘76CH and was very happy with that. Then when I upgraded to a ‘96 front end I added 2” to that.
Now on my ‘13 “72” I’m going 4” over with 3 degree raked cups. I have everything but still need the time to do it.

Thanks Tim The Grim,

For your reply. I think looking at the one picture of my old bike below where the bike is more or less in a profile view you can see that with the -2" and 10.5" rear shocks it looked perfectly level.

So on my new bike - with a +2" it will lift the front end four inches over what's pictured below and I think that will be just enough to get that kind of standing up chopper stance look in the front. That coupled will slammed 10.5" shocks or struts it will be perfect.

It will be a looker once its done plus with the 1250 kit, 04 heads, Mikuni. pipe and cams it should be a runner too. By other forum members estimates it should easily be in the 90 rwhp range.

I figure about another month or so of buying parts and I'll be ready to start building.

I'm looking for a set of mini tach and Spedo's like I had on my old bike below. I need to figure out a driver sissy bar. I had one made by ProTech but I think they are defuncted now. The sissy bar is the easy part its the mounts that go on the shock mount bolts at the top that will be the trick.

Question. I've always loved the look of Springer front ends. How do they feel compared to a standard fork setup? Better? Worse? The same?

The springer front end is a nostalgia build not a performance build. There is a reason modern bikes are not equipped with them.

I thought it also might have been an expensive part that could not be modified. BMW did that Telelever System on some of their motorcycles which is closer to a Springer than Hydraulic Forks.
