I don't think the cross hatch from the hone was incorrect, but never honed at all. Just bored.
Look at the last pic in post #25. I've never seen a hone leave a pattern like that no matter how it was used.

Need speed. I think he lowered the piston and went in there with some sandpaper thinking he was doing some good to help seal the rings. An old small engine repair trick.

My home made valve spring compressor. Guides were tight with no play.

No everything is steel. I only tacked it as I didn't want to ruin a Wilton c clamp. In hindsight I should have put it on the other end. But it works for now.

Chevelle is referring to your valve collars. The part the keepers hold in place.

They are steel. Unless they make an aluminum magnet. Stainless steel valves, steel guides, steel keepers. I am going to pick up some valve compound and clean the seats up a little. They all look good, and as previous were holding liquid. But figure may as well at this point.

Found out last night the PO took some sandpaper and did what he thought was roughing up the cylinders. I told my buddy to tell him that he did more harm than good. Crosshatching to help seat new rings is not circular surface scratches. Hope this prevents him from doing that again!

Hey. You gotta take the bad with the good some times.

Sign of a stand up dude is how well he rolls with adversity.

If I was in your shoes. I'd roll with a KISS refurbish on those jugs and heads. Throw in some some unleaded seats. Edit: If a good machine/head shop is close by. If not. Roll with the originals.
Call it a day. Ride the crapola out of it.
