There comes a point where it simply isn't worth it to continue to use the architecture because it takes too many cubes making too little to and not enough efficiency.
Precisely
Here cames in to play wet head engineering... four valves... etc...
Anyway if on XLs platform you were forced to change on water cooling...
well... is just the case to look at BMW boxer engine... the water cooled one differ aesthetically little from the previous air cooled... and the bike keep in this way her charisma...

like BMW... Harley ever had designed a slow evolution of the same engines... in this way refined them over and over

Both firms had tried to implement also revolution...
XGs and VRods for HD and the little linear twins for BMW...
but that is a huge gamble in a business ambient...
sometimes the investment poured to get the production never return

they already ditched the dyna, next to the sportster it was by far the most popular choice for young harley riders, if they ditch the sportster too, well............

Nib, I agree with all that. I thought you were suggesting they figure out a way not to go wet head or water.

Where are you getting this statistic?

I mean looking at prices alone I could guess I might be true, but I'd like to see actual numbers.

Then again they didn't "ditch" the Dyna so much as come up with a better replacement which was still air-cooled.

I have no reason to believe younger riders wouldn't embrace the new models.

If they poured an M8 solution in the XLs... they will achieve all goals...

if they will adopt to keep for the next years the XLs for EPA... and replace them for EU... IMO this is the beginning of the end... sooner or later eventually they will be replaced even in the US...

The 2017 Dyna Street Bob MSRP is $13,849.
The 2018 Softail Street Bob MSRP is $14,499.
For $550 more the buyer gets:
- Bigger, rigid-mount engine with dual counterbalancers
— And only one cam!
- 4-valve, oil-cooled heads
- Mono-shock chassis with improved handling

I suspect that there are riders who bought a ‘17 Street Bob who regret not waiting until 2018. I’m not saying that the Dyna Street Bob is a bad bike, I considered buying one before I bought my ‘15 CP, just that the Softail Street Bob is a better bike than the Dyna.

Your right, most of the add on tuners will either rewrite or override the ECM settings, but I was just referring to ECM replacement unit as opposed to the factory ECM that requires proprietary software from the dealer to change. My point was that if an ECM needs to be replaced why use the HD ECM and then supplement with a tuner when a tunable aftermarket ECM is available and does both functions.
