The nipple is under the starter, can't run it straight up.
The routing was changed for 1981-up models.
See this service bulletin.

The transmission vent hose should be routed under the starter, over all the oil lines and the rear brake line, then down between the pivot bolt and swing arm.

It looks like they were trying to keep the curves in the hose from being too sharp.

You might try hemostats to get the hose on the nipple?

I believe that this is a jargon issue. Thanks for the post I also saw this one elsewhere.
I am referring to the transmission vent nipple which is directly under the solenoid/starter, I believe that you are referring to the cam/gearcase vent which feeds back to the oil tank.
