Default 1982 Front Hydraulic Master Cylinder

What is back up disc in harley front brake master cylinder? Harley manual for XLX/XR 79 to 85 models diagram 2-34 shows this part (no.18) My bike has one, but 83 and 84 models don't. Why is this? Is this part even necessary? I would like to know what it actualy does. I don't understand why only 82 models have this part.

a picture would say a lot.
the master would have a primary pressure cup and a secondary backup o-ring that would give reduced braking power so total failure would not happen but warns the rider something is wrong. if that backup leaks, goes out the master housing at the push pin.

This may have something to do with it.
From service bulletin M-853:
http://www.sportsterpedia.com/lib/ex...in:tsb0853.pdf

On all 1982 models, the front brake master cylinder is constructed so there is no free play in the brake hand lever when the hand control switch assemblies are positioned
correctly.

It doesn't give details any further though.
1981 and earlier front master cylinders should have some free play.
1982 and later do not. The internals are held in place by a seal ring.
