Default 05 Sportster 1200c brake pedal frozen

Drive home from work was uneventful until about two blocks from house when the rear brake pedal suddenly quit working. Pedal won't depress. Stuck in disengaged position so no brake drag. Visual inspection shows nothing obviously wrong. Brake pads and master cylinder rebuilt maybe 3500 miles ago. Working perfectly until now. Florida bike, garage kept. Fluid levels fine. Dot 5.

Thinking Caliper just a little stuck. Is that common?

"Pedal won't depress" - Does the brake light come on?

If the caliper is stuck, I would expect the brake light to work because you are pressurizing the line.

On the other hand, if the brake light does not work, then I would suspect the MC is the problem because the line is not being pressurized.

Did you replace the stock DOT 3 or 4 by DOT 5?
That can be the source of your problem, DOT 5 will cause the seals (meant for DOT 3/4) to swell and disintegrate in the long run.
Proper replacement or upgrade to DOT 3/4 is DOT 5.1, not silicone based DOT 5.

Thumbs up Think it's fixed

Thanks IXL and Motorfish. That's great feedback. Good to know next time something similar happens. As it turns out, while waiting for a reply I pulled the brake pads, sprayed brake cleaner on the caliper and piston and pushed the piston in gently with a C-clamp. It was pretty stiff but when I put it all together again and took it for a spin, the pedal freed up and now the rear brakes appear to be functioning normally....for now perhaps.

Motorfish, not sure why I mentioned Dot 5. That's what the bike specs. Guess I just wanted to provide as much info as possible.

Thanks again for the quick response, guys. It's why I love this site.
Ride safe!

2005 was still DOT 5, they did not switch back to DOT 4 until 2007.
