Smells like gas is a good thing. Gas dripping Wetting the Engine. Not so much.
I run a B on my 1990. I run a Zenith Bendix on my 1980.

You learn the tickler yet? http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/d...als/superb.pdf

Got any pics? We all use https://imgbb.com/

As far as backfire and smelling like gas. You might use the link I gave you to learn how to adjust it.
B carbs are stupid simple to dial in and use. They are just glorified Linkhert carbs to me.

I run a 70 main jet and 29.5 intermediate on mine if that is any help. But mine is punched out 1200cc. You should be OK if you find a 68 or 69 main jet on your 1979.

All yours may need is adjustement. There is the idle mixture screw. Tickler should be down. Idle set at 1000 to be safe.

Here is 1980 build thread. http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2067738
You might get some maintenance ideas from it on what to look over on yours.

Edit. Use the search bar on the bottom of the forum. Use this search term in it
Ironhead intake leaks.

Might be a good start to figuring out why you are running rough. Besides the ignition side of things. Read the stickies in the iron head section also. You'll learn something.

2nd edit: Let's hope a mod moves this thread to the ironhead section. So it gets the attention it deserves. Next time you post a thread about your bike. Use the Ironhead section of the forum.

Howdy and Welcome.
Wish I was 17 again.

Better snatch this up before it is gone.
