It should be noted that all those Mom & Pops were chasing the last dollar possible as well... It's not always just the big corporations that are looking short-term for a quick dollar... Someone got money for selling out or a bump in profits for exclusive rights (all eggs in one basket)... In most cases, they are lured into selling for the money (rarely with threats) rather than plodding along at a pace they can sustain into the future...

I feel for them - Business ownership is not an easy thing...

modern business is homogenized.
there really is not a price difference between chains they all sell at the same price. Want a V&H naked intake, bet the price quoted is 149 and change.
that is the lowest they are allowed to advertise.
so they buy out the companies so they have an exclusive, but in doing so they eliminate the reason you wanted to buy the product, the guy developing the stuff had talent, but he is not there anymore and the line goes stale.

Want killer stuff at a good price? go to local shops. Ones just making there name, ones that are developing product.

or you could go to some mega store that could care less if you buy, there is someone in line behind you.
