Default 61st birthday road trip, 23/10/18-25/10/18

My 61st birthday & I've moved back to Thornton after 16 years of living & working in Blackpool. My first time back living here since 2002, I've been here nearly a week & noticed the difference right away. No police sirens, angry drunken shouting, no litter or dog crap. Open my card from my sister & she's given me £30 which will help with the trip
My garage isn't ready yet so I have the bike chained up to a concrete fence post with an alarmed disc lock. It's been frosty again & I'll give it til 10 to clear having come off on ice (without injury) in January. Breakfast of porridge & a bacon sandwich with brown sauce, shower hair washed & braided & dress for the trip to Sedgeford, Norfolk.
Single figure temperatures in the day with a windchill to 1 -3 degrees. Thermal long sleeved top & pants I use for bird/nature watching, long sleeved T shirt, lined hiking pants, long sleeved fleece, Dainese gortex pants, jacket, boots, gloves & Keiss heated inner gloves & Shoei GT Air helmet & it's time to go.
Oil level & tyre pressures checked last night & tank topped up also. I get around 100 miles on the 883R tank before the red light comes on. I've ridden 22 miles on the red light when I was lost in Cheshire.First fuel stop should be at Ferrybridge services at the end of M62.
The frost has melted but I'm sticking to the main road past the windmill & war memorial before leaving Thornton to head for the M55. I packed clean clothing & toiletries last night & they go in the saddlbags. I wonder how I managed without bags on my previous bikes. I've gone about 2 miles & it's warmed up the bike & now I'm in an unlimited zone, time to opn it up.
Through Skippool, & on to the M55 at Kirkham. Not much traffic about & it's sunny enough to use my drop down sun visor. Another thing I wondered how I did without.
My shoulder is holding up for now. I started getting rotator cuff pain early this year. I'm passing through farmlands until I see the sign for M6 south near Preston. Still light traffic & all going well, I can hear the growl from the Khromewerk slip ons, nice sound not an anti social racket. I never had any complaints about noise since having the stage 1 tune done in March last year.
All going well until just south of Preston there's 40mph warning lights & a lane closure due to debris. Lots of tyre carcass about until just before my turnoff for the M61.
Traffic light again on a Tuesday morning around 1130. Back up to 70 until I hit the M60 where there's more speed restrictions on & off til the M62 east.Britain's highest motorway & with some of it's best scenery though not without it's dark side as I see the signs for Saddleworth & it's assosciation with the terrible murders of children. Even in the sun it has a grim look & feel.Past the farm in the middle of the motorway & climbing high towards Yorkshire. As if on cue the light comes on at 100 miles & I stop at Ferrybridge services for a top up & stretch my legs. There's a familiar face at the pumps, the Scotsman on a Yamaha YBR125 as his BMW has been shunted off the stand in a car park. I met him a few times over the last year as I was in the north east .He's borrowed his son's Yamaha while he's at sea & the BMW is off the road. After a chat & can of pop it's time to head south & east.
Having made good progress I'm now stuck on the A1M behind a slow moving line of traffic held up by a slow moving wide load for several miles through south Yorkshire. Through Nottinghamshire & into the flatlands of Lincolnshire, over the splendid Sutton swing bridge a Victorian engineering masterpiece & past the RAF airfieldsit's time for a spam sandwich & can of pop at Cheerios in Sleaford.A Big Twin tourer, BMW adventure bike & a Triumph Bonneville in the car park.
On through the flat but scenic roads as I find the A149 (I think!) & head for Hunstnaton. I pass the Queens residence at Sandringham & I'm nearly there.I decide to do something I was going to do tomorrow & head to Snetisham.I reach the beach & stop to look around. I have an interest in missing persons cases, some may find it macabre but I visit their last sightings. In August 1974 22 year old Pamela Exall vanished from Snetisham beach. Despite an intensive search of the area & bird reserve no trace has ever been found. After watching some wading birds (never travel without my binoculars) I top the bike up & I go to the King William at Sedgeford & check in.
It's getting colder in the late afternoon sun as I unpack & lock up my Sportster.I've racked up quite a few miles this week, a Saturday trip to Liverpool open night & general running around doing errands now from west coast to east coast.
The King William is a splendid pub & restaurant, I have a single room for the night. I unpack & change. I'm not a big drinker as I got older I find I have little tolerance to alcohol but I'm having a beer before my evening meal. Nick the genial host is off but Lisa the friendly barmaid is on duty. A rather spicy venison Madras curry for my birthday meal with a glass of red wine. Another beer & it's an early night. Tomorrow I visit Southwold (2 years after my former art teacher recommended it) & ride to Coggeshall for another overnight stay.

Sounds like a good ride from almost 4 years ago. Will you be doing something similar this year?

Enjoyed that, empathy with the rotator cuff, both of mine are bad. Will they redo the hip? Recently had my other knee replaced, much better now.
Keep it safe!

Thanks Paul. The hip is painful but not yet requiring replacement though it will be in the future. I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder which helped a lot. My sister had both rotator cuffs operated on, she got the arthritis etc worse than me. Hope you keeping well & enjoying your writeups

Glam you'll enjoy Southwold, the town is nice and ride right down to the riverside were the RNLI hut is. Overlooking the sea is the fisherman's room with loads of great old pictures of the town .

Awkward here just now, have four bikes and none road worthy. Sucks to have ridden through yet another Michigan winter and with much better weather am sidelined. My own fault cause when I have a bike running I just keep riding, anywhere, everywhere, when I should be working on a back up. Working on the HotRod bike as it’s been off the road for over six years. Got a head gasket on it and decided to mount the exhaust before replacing the rear cylinder exhaust port bolts, (I broke one trying to hang the exhaust last time- stroker motors being taller you have to expand them to fit, being a 2:1 makes it more difficult). Got the exhaust hung and then slipped in the rear bolts, easy peasy. New fully charged battery cured my intermittent ignition woes. Starts almost instantly and runs well, yea! Decided to swap over the upgrades made to Black Beauty over the last four years running power cords and harnesses along the backbone before hanging the gas tank. Auxiliary driving light harnesses are in place and a tie in to the high beam at the headlight will give me dimming for the driving lights. Also ran the power up front and mounted the G.P.S. Tank hung, fresh 90 octane no-ethanol and Lucas fuel treatment added. Lifted the choke plunger, switched ignition on and instant potato, potato. What a relief. Now to resolve mounting the A/C and make sense out of the spaghetti mess with wires hanging out everywhere. Sigh, now becomes a labor of love, smile! Keep it safe.

I was wondering if anyone here had some tips for organizing things to make the process easier, both the 'take-apart' phase and the 'put-together' phase.
Right now I am working on building shelves, lots and lots of shelves, as I figure having ample storage will go a long way toward being organized. I am also going to install lighting next month. Already picked the lightning system here.
So, here. I have a bit of experience, you can ask me if you need help.
