Those wagons are filled with hay - headed to feed some of the millions of horses that 'served' during WWI. The feeding of the livestock required constant supply trains, just like feeding the men.

It's said, Britain shipped 500-1000 horses every day to Europe. In all, the estimate is that 8-million horses and 1-million dogs died while being used in the various armies of that war.

Don't Never Mind - It was another terrible aspect of that war!
