Long time since I saw one. They were sold as Cossacks by Whitakers of Blackpool. The shop was in Cookson Street where all the rub and tug shops were (they're still there but Whitakers is now a patch of waste ground).
A 650 twin & a topless hand shandy for £400, bargain!

Back in the day our “Phaedrus”,(formerly Paralegalpete), ran a two wheel drive for a bit. Some footage on one of our infamous (Michigan), Thumb Runs.

Met a guy with a 2 wheel drive earlier this year at an open night. He was an expert on Russian flat twins and had several solos, sidecars. The 2 wheel drive looked just like a wartime German outfit

The Russians did in WWII what the Japanese did in the 60's and 70's: Copy
The Ural and the Dneper where exact copies of the WWII BMW R71 (Wehrmacht). They still have that design, although little better than they were. In the 80's the quality was horrendous. Some people swapped the complete engine for a newer BMW airhead, which had the camshaft under the crankshaft for more ground clearance. Don't know what their built quality is these days. I still think they look great!

There are a couple of them here in town I see on the road year round. One guy was out in -24c last year! I had a closer look at one and talked to the dealer last year at the bike show. Pretty cool idea (2wd) but, for $24k I'll keep the Sporty and the old Honda quad.

A friend of mine rode one in the 2001 (I believe) Iron Butt Rally. He finished, but was on his 3rd engine when he crossed the finish line. Quality has improved since then from what I understand, but not sure if it is close to what we are used to with our Sporties. They do look like fun, but my sights are set on a Servicar if I go to 3 wheels.

Pete had an issue during a long ride, failed U-joint maybe? I think he got rid of it not long afterwards.

These Urals & Dneprs were the ,,big twins" in eastern Europe, for decades. As reliability improvements,we use car parts(pistons, rings, valves)And then these machines were running in any conditions, with any kind of substance that can produce explosion in the chamber...You can compost poop in the sidecar;will run with it s flaveur..More elegant,I was using the LPG container from my gas cooker for some years;more cheep than gasoline.

I heard you can fix them with a hammer
I see you own a Dnepr.
What's the difference between a Ural and a Dnepr? I just read you can recognize a Dnepr on the square valve covers. But that's all I know. Weren't they both from Kiev, Ukraine?

Yes,the hammer must be used by the owner on himself,if is not able to fix it,with a few basic tools...Well,both of them share the flat twin design, but two different engines. For example Urals have rolling bearings in connecting rods big end,Dneprs have insert bearings;Urals were manufactured in Irbit,Russia from 1939.In 1930 s just before ww2,germans and russians had an agreement into development of military machines, including motorcycles..
