The clank usually happens when engine is hot. It's due to what we have referred too as heat soak. The engine stops up against compression when you stop for gas, then the heat expands the mix in the cylinder that it stopped against, then when you go to start it, it's hard for the starter to push past that initial compression from a dead start. Sometimes it helps to push the bike backwards in gear to get off that dead stop against compression. (That's how we get a speedway bike ready to bump start, roll it backwards until it comes up against compression going back. That gives it a free spin forward before it gets up against compression).

I just had it happen at a filling station, with a person beside me in a vehicle, watching. Slightly embarrassing, but, of course, I got it started and left. Intermittent issue pops up at bad times.

I don't know if I have the same starter on my '05, but it starts first time, every time;
but it only has 12K miles on it. Starting it in neutral or in gear makes no difference.
It's a shame the poll didn't include the "no problem" category so the numbers could show.
