Good morning folks. Just this morning picked up a 1980 hardtail bobber and wanted to pop in and say Hi. My 1st bike back in 1994 was a 1979 XLH, my 3rd was a 1995 XLH883, and after a slew of Japanese and European machines (some of which I still have) I rode a buddies '77 Triumph and got the bug to get another vintage bike. I have a '72 Aermacchi SX350 in crates in my garage but once I started pricing parts and labor to rebuild it I decided I can get a decent Ironhead again for less money and ride this summer rather than spend all my time on ebay for odd-ball rare parts and special tools. I love the XL engine, ridden more Sportsters and tube-framed Buells than I can recall, but the thing I love most is I bought that 1st Ironhead for $3k in 1994, I bought the '95 Evo for $3k in 2000, and I paid just about the same for this 1980 Ironhead today. Now that's consistency, or else $3000 is just a trigger for my bike-buying impulse. I also have a 2015 KTM 390 Duke, and a 1986 Yamaha Maxim 700, my wife rides a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250 and a 1972 Honda CL175, and my daughter has a 1965 Honda S65. My old Aermacchi is going to go up on the auction block so if anyone wants it, DM me.
OK that's me, now about the bike; I'll post up some pictures once I get it home and off the trailer. Old school hardtail frame, forward controls and mini-apes, coil sprung saddle, custom painted coffin tank, Super G shorty carb, wrapped turn out drags, LEDs front and rear, early-model Sportster rear wheel with shoulder aluminum rim and drilled drum brake. No front brake, and what appears to be a 21" dirt bike front wheel and unknown forks. Whoever built this did it "right" because you can feel where they cut off the brackets for mounting a caliper on the left fork leg.

Welcome to the XLF! You have a lot of bikes omg
I can’t find time to ride the one Sporty.
I bought an 83 Maxim 550 in 1984. Loved
that bike so much wish I still had it.
Hope you can post pics of your line up.

As it were, my 2nd bike was an 82 Maxim 550 and like you, I absolutely loved that bike. I bought it because the 79 XL had become such a headache to maintain, and I managed to put almost 25,000 miles on the Maxim without anything more than fresh oil. Yeah over all of those miles I probably should have replaced the tires, maybe adjusted the valves, perhaps even some chain maintenance but I was young and dumb and lucky to still be here for more reasons than just poor bike maintenance. I've learned a lot about wrenching since then.
