Just make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and spray right over the grey finish. I just did mine with the Harley wrinkle black and it looks great so far (after 24 hours of drying, waiting till tomorrow to unmask it.)

I just used masking tape and newspaper and painted mine took about an hour to mask, and 10 minutes to paint. I believe I used Duplicolor engine paint, Semi-Gloss Black. Been there for 3 years now and still looks like it did the day I painted it. I used Gunk engine degreaser (the gel or foamy kind works the best) and a nylon detail brush to scrub the tough spots before I masked it off. You can get everything at any local auto parts store.

Foil and lots of masking tape! Also, if you can find thread protectors, you can put them over the bolt heads to keep from painting them! Works very well!

Don't know if they are still around but Kal Guard had a satin black paint I used to paint my Suzuki back in the 80's.

I painted mine last weekend. The foil idea is great. I washed the bike since it needed it anyway and Gunked the engine using a toothbrush where needed.
I used Rustolium satin (it's what I had) on the cases and grill paint on the head and jugs.
I may go over the cases with flat later. It's not the greatest job but she's a go-er not a shower.

I would not tear down a perfectly healthy running bike for a paint job. I would just remove everthing that is not difficult to remove but just in the way. I would remove the obvious: Aircleaner, carb, exhaust and what not. Use masking tape and go meticulous and take your time.

<edit: didn't realize it was an older thread>

Looks great! Never thought of using foil.

I got the foil idea from a couple threads on here.
Comes off a lot easier than tape, too!
