Do you really have to through all that to get to the neutral switch? Is it different on 04+?

Yep - same on 04+ ---



From the 2007 Manual:
Quote:
A pin on the shifter drum contacts the neutral indicator switch
plunger, completing the neutral indicator circuit.

If switch requires replacement, the rear muffler and rear
exhaust pipe must be removed to remove the transmission
sprocket cover. The drive belt and transmission sprocket must
also be removed; there is not enough clearance to allow the
removal of the switch without first removing the transmission
sprocket.
I guess when the original design used a chain drive, the drive sprocket was not in the way - but with the upgrade to belt drive, it then covered over the switch location...

I'd ohm that tan wire before and the switch before I took the sprocket off. If it shows continuity between the plug on the switch to the frame in neutral, the switch is good

Yep - I suggested that last month ... BUT ...

For a long time, the Neutral Indicator Switch on Sportsters have been known to be intermittent (perhaps because of the functional design)... The switch may 'be good' but not reliably indicate the neutral status... Or, the switch may be malfunctioning... Or the contact to the shifter drum may be slightly askew...

The alignment of the shifter pawl to the shifter drum is critical and is set using a drill bit...

Of course, if you remove switch, you can more easily test the reliability of the switch itself by repeatedly pressing the contact, instead of putting the trans in and out of gear...

A lot of fuss in any case...
