It's just become too blue for me. High taxes and lots of government. Seems to happen in any state that has large population centers.

But I definitely like to visit. There's some great fishing up and down the Columbia.
My 5 acres with a cabin on Mt. Hull near Tonasket has annual taxes of $240. It's off the grid and in the woods on a private road. About 5-6 hours from Seattle.

Did what you want to do. But on the rio grande. 1 hour east of El Paso. 2,000 square foot cinder block covered with stucco ranch house. Well, Power pole and Telephone. 20 x 40 foot air force power plant building converted into my shop. Sits on a couple of acres. Paved road to ranch house.

Been paid for since the 1990's. Taxed as my homestead. My old lady wanted me to move to civilization.
So it is abandoned now. But taxes are paid every year. You can walk from my yard to Mexico.
It is a lot cooler and greener being in the rio grande valley.

I don't like cold weather.

I'm hip on Texas, but my brother is committed to the north. We'll figure something out. Maybe we can buy your place! :-)

Walk over some one else's land or public land to Mexico or are you expecting an eminent domain claim?

I need to ride out there and take pictures. Cuz this one is the only one I got for now.

Off topic: I might have to sell my place in Pecos Texas also. We might be moving to Texas Hill country later on this year. Time will tell.

aswracing and whitewalls have some great info. I travel extensively in eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and the Idaho panhandle. I'd make suggestions by county...definitely consider Okanogan and Ferry counties, but also Stevens, Pend Oreille, Garfield, Columbia and some parts of Adams, Asotin, Douglas, Grant, Walla Walla, and Lincoln counties in Washington. You might even have a look at Klickitat Cty.

In Idaho look at almost anyplace from Idaho County on north, although Bonner and Kootenai counties may be more expensive. Northeast Oregon is fantastic, too, particularly Wallowa, Union, Baker, and parts of Umatilla counties.

Most of these counties will keep you away from the larger cities, offer forested areas, abundant hunting and fishing, and provide plenty of quiet, winding roads. Then there is the Montana option, which I've only just begun to explore... Good luck!
